The "new" iPad Announcement / Discussion Thread

I guess the idea is to call it simply iPad. Like MacBook Pro is simply MacBook Pro, whether it is Mid 2010, or Late 2011 model. The features change, but the product name stays the same.

Speaking of shipping, looks like mine shipped out. Confusingly though when I entered the number to track it I got this:

pad.PNG

When I got my last iPad I saw the tracking all the way from China to here, while according to this the iPad "originated" in Pennsylvania. So does this mean my iPad is in PA now and it's just going to stay there until the 15th when it's finally shipped to me?

Looks like they want FedEx to foot the bill for storage until actual delivery.

They picked it up before shipping info was sent?

I wonder how many mistakes will happen, and people get their iPad 2012s (I'm determined to distinguish them- we'll see how long that lasts;)) early.

You can keep calling it the iPad 2012, but you'll be the only one. :D

Yes I do... and the last slide they showed at the end saying they had more surprises coming this year kind of gave it away to me.

I keep hearing a 7 inch version is coming...

I suspect you're right. :haha

Call it "ipad 3" so everyone will know WTF your talking about. That's what I plan to do.

Fine by me. I just want to know which iPad we're talking about. I realize I'll probably lose on this, but I really think it's a significant enough product to have it's own name, especially since they started it that way.

I have a feeling we will see ANOTHER iPad released this year...

Come on, that's exactly what was said when the iPad 2 came out. And a whole year went by. Remember the six month cycle everyone was expecting, but never happened.

I say this year we see an Apple TV-powered HDTV, the iPhone 5, Mountain Lion, and a re-do of the MacBook Pro, plus some enhancements to iCloud

I doubt there will be a 7" tablet. Just not feeling it. And I saw the last slide too. The problem with the 7" tablet is screen resolution - and most likely NONE OF the 200,000 iPad apps working nicely on it.

I don't.

Apple needs just three catalysts a year to keep pumping the revenue stream. They do 5 each year with 3 out of 5 big winners. Now they need to focus on iphone 5 in the summer and Apple TV for the fall. New models of Mac Air and ipods will not be revolutionary this year. If iphone 5 is a winner like 4s and Apple TV produces the catalyst like Mac Air, then the projected revenue stream will position Apple to be at $750B market cap and $ 225B revenue.

Scott- that was speculated to be the iphone5, not a 4" ipad. :D

The answer to the lower cost was brilliant. No 7" but will continue to market the ipad2 at reduced prices for those who must shop price. I love it! More money for Apple.

I agree. I do think we'll see changes to the MacBook Pro though - so it becomes more air-like, and loses the optical drive, along the lines of the iCloud model.

With a Mac, you'd have total convergence. But that is for a different thread. :)

Apparently the switch from March 16 to Mar 19 for delivery dates happened this morning sometime.

Even yesterday as the day went on certain models were using the 19th instead of the 16th. I remember many of the AT&T models were saying the 19th, while surprisingly all the Verizon models were still the 16th.

They want a smaller 7 inch model so they can sell it as a low cost / educational model.

Nope. The problem with that is that iBook Author is really configured for a 9.7" screen - and that's where all the iBook development is going. I say in six months the iPad2 16GB wi-fi (the only iPad 2 still being sold) will drop in price. Maybe to Kindle Fire pricing, or close, and THEN they have educational market - BUT they also stay with app compatibility.

Apple still has a larger AT&T market from all those years of AT&T iPhone exclusivity.

I doubt it. There's no real benefit to making a 7" one as clearly the market for a smaller tablet is quite small, and I think we'd see Apple sell their existing models to educational institutions as a subsidy and take a small hit/make less profit with each one sold. No point in making a whole new model and screwing up their very successful development model to fill the need of a niche market. Besides, Apple is CLEARLY healthy enough to take a small loss per hardware sale given their cash amount not to mention they'd likely make the money back on app sales.
