Upgrade receiver message

My uncle has had a DirecTv sub for about 10 years now. He called me and said he is getting a message along the lines of "you are required to upgrade your receiver". I don't have the exact model but I know it is one the the original receivers and definitely not HD Mpeg 4.

My guess is he will lose all his SD channels if he doesnt upgrade the receiver? He has a grey market sub here in Canada so he obviously cant call DirecTv and tell them to send out a new unit. Can he buy a HD receiver from someplace like Ebay and use his existing access card?

No he cannot use the same card on a new receiver.

Thanks royrdsjr! I contacted his broker and a new receiver is on its way.

It's sad that in 2013 we are still playing these silly games to simply watch TV. The good news however is that new technologies like high speed internet will soon make it impossible for the government bureaucrats to regulate what they think is best for us.
