I have a new s/w on vip211k today. It's L454RGGB-N, it used to be L453. I have connected a 120GB HD and it did show that "call dish to activate" message.
Will give a try today at 12:01 AM.

He didn't come back with a result. Could be false alarm - I already spent $40 for that error.

I see from RandallA's Firmware thread that the ViP211 is up to Receiver ID R080665876. Close, but not quite there yet (another 780K receivers to go!). I'm waiting for the 1-4000000000 message...Yeah, I hear ya. My 211's R# starts with an "8"... A real LONG ways away.

The only advantage of the MY DVR type of products is that are approved.
The approved list consists of the WD My DVR Expander USB Edition, Seagate Showcase and Apricorn DVR Xpander.
I stream Blu Ray discs off of regular WD My Books through USB, and they play without a hitch. So I'm not sure what the special DVR extender one does differently.
