I am trying to find a good hard drive for the VIP211K to use the DVR feature. I have seen the western digital dvr expander hard drive, but I couldn't tell that it offered any more value or features than regular ones that don't say "dvr expander."

Would someone please point me in the right direction?? I have searched the forum and am having a hard time finding what I am looking for.

Thanks,

Robert

I just use mine as an EHD for my vip622, but my WD Mybook 1TB is my favorite so far. I've also got a maxtor, and a seagate, but the Mybook wakes up the fastest, and runs great.

I purchased a WD 500GB WD5000AVVS Sata (bare drive) from MWave.com for $70. Also a hard drive docking station (Sata to usb). This leaves the hard drive out in the open for cooling.
It is just barely warm to the touch when running and very quiet. Check WD's website for this drive, it's rated for DVR use, low power use and quiet running.

Wouldn't this leave the hard drive unprotected from dust, "the elements", etc.? Would this be a problem sitting on top of a cabinet in the bedroom? I like the idea of using an internal hard drive though (cheaper if replacement is needed).

Well as long as you don't mind a hard drive sticking up on top of the cabinet it should be ok. :D Although when you turn off the lights you shouldn't be able to see it. ;)

Actually for all pratical purposes it's no more exposed than it would be in a computer or an external case as they all have air (with the dust in it) flowing over them.

This should be a good one for a bedroom. I put it up next to my ear while it was running and could just barely hear it, so I doubt if you would hear it running even in a quiet room. Note that I didn't try that though so don't quote me on it! :-)

Would the dish network box interface well with this drive if I bought a hard drive enclosure that converts sata to usb? I can't see any reason it wouldn't. Plus, that would serve the function of the hard drive docking station that you use and give me a case that would probably look a little better aesthetically on top of a cabinet.
