[VOOM] Let the fun begin...

After a 9 day wait, I got Voom installed this morning. The
installation went pretty well. We had some trouble getting the OTA
channels in and my installer ended up replacing the antenna with
another unit of the same kind which seemed to fix the problem.

Now that's he has left, I've discovered two problems.

1. When I change the channel to certain channels, the box completely
locks up. I get the menu bar across the bottom of the screen and with
completely black screen behind it. The only way to get out of this is
to soft reboot.

The CSR says that I need to get my software upgrades and that will fix
this. I'm at Nep 600 right now. So far, I'm finding that about 1/2
of the channels lock up my box. I'm personally wondering if this is a
switch/hardware issue somewhere outside rather than software but until
I'm upgraded, the CSR's can't really troubleshoot the problem. I
don't know a lot about satellites but I do know that there's sometime
issues with polarities/switches/etc. that can cause 50% of the
channels to not come in. Any ideas? Or is this just a software issue
and I need to be patient?

2. When watching soccer on WorldSportHD, my picture is being cropped.
With the little scoreboard in the upper left corner, I can only see
about 1/2 of the W in the WorldSport logo. But when I press the Voom
button and the picture is shown in the little preview window, I can
see that there is a substantial amount (maybe a full inch) of picture
that is being cropped.

Interestingly, this only happens in the 780/1080 picture modes. Both
of the 480 modes show the full picture. I've also tried just about
every combination of Picture Format settings and none seem to impact
this issue. Has anyone else seen this? Could it just be my TV? I've
heard about "Overscan Areas" on HDTVs but I don't really understand
what it is and if that is related to my problem.

FYI, I'm Vooming on a Toshiba 46SX83 CRT 16:9 HDTV monitor through the
DVI input. I've also tried the component inputs and see little/no
difference in the picture quality or the cropping issue.

Any comments, suggestions?

Patiently waiting for software downloads...

Jarrett

You definately need the upgrades to help the lockups, though I don't remember if it fixes the Worldsport issues. I never watch it.

I don't have that problem on worldsport - but I don't remember if I ever did either. Maybe the new software will help.

You should get the new download tonight or early tomorrow morning and should fix most of your problems. I got a receiver replaced recently and got the new 7.26 software early the following morning. You should see that your a version in your targeted software in your menu.

Jarrett,

I have a Samsung CRT 32 inch HDTV that has similar troubles. I've noticed that if you measure the screen of a lot of these CRT HDTV set, they don't quite work out to a 16:9 ratio. I'm missing the same inch or so on each side of the screen. Sometimes I swear I am also missing about a 0.5 inch strip on the top and bottom as well. It just seems cropped. When I measured my set against a plasma, I noticed it wasn't quite as wide as it is supposed to be when compared to a plasma. It's my guess that sets like you and I have are just going to crop those tiny edges in 720/1080 format. After sometime, I have forgotten all about this as an issue. Most of the image is fine anyways. Perhaps VOOM may know of a workaround or, more likely, someone here. I'm guessing it's just an HDTV set issue, not a software one, as it is what I've had for over a year now.

Good luck.
