RE: [VOOM] THE LANDLINE MISTAKE

Landline service dying??? LOL

I don't mean to offend, but I lived in Silicon Valley(arguably the tech
capital of the world) for better than 25 years. Only recently have the
broadband internet offerings gotten to what I would consider a reasonable
level and wireless service here is sometimes a total joke. Highly doubt they
will be displacing the Bells anytime soon as they have their own network and
customer service issues.

Do you use wireless exclusively for all things at your home including Net
access? Did you see the earlier post suggesting a VOIP service like Vonage?
I recently signed on with them and so far have been happy.

In order to release next gen hardware with features like PPV and VOD
available directly from your remote will require some form of landline
connection. Wireless is still too immature for anyone to seriously get
behind it and the number of people who have completely given up landlines
for all home use is still very much a minority, IMO. You might think DISH is
doing you a favor by not requiring it today, but I think it's more an issue
of their hardware being dated. Look for next gen stuff to make it more of a
necessity to have that phone connection.

I agree 100% with your statements about the bell companies. I believe there
are many on this yahoo group that have Vonage or a competitor of Vonage and
do not have bell service. I am currently saving over a hundred dollars a
month with Vonage vs when I had Verizon and MCI. That's $1200+ a year!!

Now in regards to getting updates, the DVR king, TIVO, added tcp/ip instead
of a phone line. As you point out, many of us here are high income, high
tech and most likely have home wireless networks. It would behuve(sic) VOOM
to add tcp/ip connectivty.

Wilt, you're the tech guy for VOOM, do you have any knowledge of this you
can share?

If VOOM requires a landline, I--as well as many other high income,
high tech customers--will go elsewhere for our HD fix. Personally, I
refuse to deal with my local telephone company. I have tried a half
dozen times to get my local phone company (Verizon in Northern
Virginia) to fix a noisy line. I even re-connected it when I heard
VOOM required it and wasted time and connection fees for an unusable
line. I disconnected it within the month, as it was worthless and
have maintained VOOM service nonetheless. Apparently, that may
change with the latest upgrade. Local landline service is dying,
with the most inefficient, worthless customer service in American
business. There is no reason for them to perform. They are dead and
know it. If VOOM wants to hitch its wagon on this worthless
enterprise and force customers to other providers, then they too
deserve their fate. I have had DishNetwork for 5 years, the last 3
without a landline. I like having VOOM and would love to keep it,
but if I am disconnected, I will bolt before getting a landline.

My area is well served with cable internet, so internet access is not
an issue w/o the landline. You have to understand that in areas of
high transiency such as the Washington metro area, there is great
value in a portable telephone number. Young people move often.
True, most people will retain their landline out of inertia, but will
think very hard about reconnecting it when they move. Landline
service will be around for the forseeable future, but no mistake
about it, they have turned the corner and will go the way of the 8
track tape. My phone number was disconnected for almost two years
and was still available when I tried to re-sign up with VOOM.

Well, if you have a (land-line) cable Internet, then you should be able to use a VoIP service like Vonage over it. That would be sufficient for VOOM and would cost you less than a new phone line...

Cox cable does not have that service yet.

Voice over IP service (like Vonage) works over pretty much ANY broadband Internet connection. So, if Cox offers high-speed Internet at all, VoIP should work for you too. It doesn't matter whether Cox itself offers VoIP service or not.
