So I purchased 2 Dish Network Hopper with slings and one has a hard drive but no smart card, but the other has no hard drive, but does have the OEM smart card. Wondering if I can move the HDD from the one with no smart card to the other with a smart card. Would this work, or would the drive get wiped/ reformatted? Would it work perfectly fine? Thanks for any help.

Sometimes the "smart card" is built into the motherboard but an updated smart card may be added through a smart card port. So, not having a physical smart card does not necessarily mean the unit will not function. Try connecting it and see if it works as is. Nothing to lose

My guess on the hard drive is that changing the unit would probably prompt a reformat or at least a wipe of the recordings on that drive since they were probably recorded under another user's account. By that same logic transferring the Hopper to a new account probably prompts the same response.

I've tried but the no smart card Hopper does prompt me to insert the card I do not have. The seller said the dish tech told them to recycle the stuff but I don't know who removed the card. As for the no hard drive but has a smart card Hopper, it bootloops and restarts and continues bootlooping.

Also as far as I know, only the Hopper 3 is able to be used without a smart card inserted into the slot. The receiver's I'm questioning are both Hopper with Sling.
