Wilt: Any DVR updates?

Is the DVR still on schedule to be released this quarter? My local cable company (Comcast) has just released an HD PVR and I am tempted to switch.

But if the Voom DVR is definitely coming this quarter (or even this year I guess) then I would love to stick around for it. If it's six months away I'd switch to Comcast and then come back to Voom when/if reports on the DVR were positive.

[VOOM] Re: Wilt: Any DVR updates?

As a Comcast subscriber, I highly suggest you go with DTV HDTivo if
you switch to anything. Cable SUCKS.

I had Comcast before I switched to Voom. After a nightmare installation I was pretty satsified -- they have all locals in HD plus other HD channels that I like. I switched to Voom for 4 reasons:

1. They have Fox Sports World
2. There was the promise of an HD DVR
3. It was a bit cheaper than Comcast for the same level of sevice
4. The anolog channels on Comcast were pretty bad

Now I'm thinking of swicthing back because:

1. Comcast recently announced the addition of Fox Sports World (I have to confirm availability in Detroit)
2. They actually have an HD PVR available (and who knows when Voom's will come out)
3. With Voom's price rise in January Comcast will be cheaper
4. Allegedly the anolog channels look better now (but who knows if that is really true)

I'd stick with Voom if I knew for sure that the DVR was coming soon.

I have a source (and this may not be news) that the new Voom DVR will be released around Jan.-Feb. The important part is though, it will NOT be made by Motorola. That's part of the holdup.

Now that is good news!

I hear Wilt struck a better deal with one of Motorola's lesser know International holdings; it's basically one of their mirrored companies operating out of Korea. I believe the name of the company is Alorotom Company LLC if memory serves. Wilt, can you confirm or deny this? :D

RE: [VOOM] Re: Wilt: Any DVR updates?

Motorola is not much more than a contract manufacturer in this picture and I
don't see any advantage to having Scientific Atlanta on the outside of the
box.

What's your personal issue with the Moto boxes?

Bob

Re: [VOOM] Re: Wilt: Any DVR updates?

Are you telling me Sci Atl is going to be the Voom HD DVR manuf???
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO??????????????????????????

I've a Sci Atl dvr (for over a year and a half) with my Time Warner cable
service, and it is the biggest, most unreliable, piece of shiite this side
of the Asian Tech industry.

This, if true, is very disappointing news... :-(

RE: [VOOM] Re: Wilt: Any DVR updates?

I had a SciAtl box in MN and it was solid as a rock. I never had any
problems with it. You never know with electronics. Remember the old hard
drive days? seagate's better, no maxtor, no western digital, no figitzu.. I
know people who will never buy and only gateway others only dell and never
gateway. With technology, what doesn't work today may rock tomorrow and what
rocks today may suck tomorrow.

[VOOM] Re: Wilt: Any DVR updates?

It's not a DVR but here in Cablevision country we have SA STB's the
SA4200HD to be exact. Other than some slow channel changes it's rock
solid. And part of the channel changing slowness is we have a
passthrough feature which lets you choose and save only the rez
supported by your TV. If you dont use this feature the box is faster.

Hmm, thanks for the info. That timeframe makes my decision a tough one. Maybe I'll switch and come back in Feb.
