Video/Content
What do the subsequent generations call what we know as "TV"?
Home viewing on large screen, at least, will continue to be called TV, pretty much regardless of content or source. Television= viewing from distance. How many generations will continue to refer to devices as phones? YouTube? They've already stopped calling TV the tube.

I like the idea of charging a premium subscription to access "The Pit" or whatever it's called these days. Haven't been there in years. But from what I hear it is just a place where members go to get insulted and subjected to selective censorship and/or membership. Facebook Groups, Reddit and some others are like that. X.com is open and free speech except speech that violates the law which, BTW, includes hate speech.

I don't think changing the name to "Friendly" will do anything to convince a stranger to come here. But I do believe "Satelliteguys" is outdated and no longer reflects the topics here these days. How about Technologyguys ?

We were of the age to call it the "boob tube" 'cause watching it made you a boob…

It was a different age, kids.
I...
Don't ever call my iphone a telephone. I either communicate and record with my watch or my iphone.
Don't ever call the screen we watch video programs and movies on a Television. It's a projector or a screen.
Don't ever call my accelerator a gas pedal in my car. Like "step on the gas"

This gave me a chuckle because it's true. There's only one political persuasion that is the "correct" one in the Pit, and if you don't agree with all of its tenets, you're pretty much persona non grata!

I would say "charge an entry fee or shut it down," but that would sound like a fascist limitation on free speech. I'm ok with leaving it open, but wish it was a more "Friendly" place.

Or you can do what SiriusXM does on ch 125 and ch 127. Have one forum that represents the left and one that represents the right. And maybe even a third one for Libertarians/Moderates. Having fair/balanced moderators is essential or it wont work though. Like, The Pit.

Or we could all just get along :biggrin

Echo chambers are what got us into the modern political landscape we have now IMO.

If Scott did decide to charge a premium for the Pit, he should set it up as a true free speech section with no select moderation. The rule would be simple- Free Speech except that which physically threatens or doxes others, including nonmembers. Violators may be banned from the entire site.
Scott should be quite clear with a warning stating- The New Pit is like a cage fight and entering the cage you may be verbally punched! If you have your feelings hurt by something someone else said stay out of the cage. No refunds! You have been warned!

I try to refrain from posting about the pit outside of the pit but since we're multiple responses in I'll add my 2 cents.

The pit as-is is perfect. It's a paid, opt-in portion of the site with moderation that is spot on. There's a great comradery amongst the regulars that post there and it's a great source for news and information. Maybe it helps that I have a thick skin, but it's the part of the site I visit the most and what keeps me coming back daily.

I think some of the forums could be combined to make things a little more easy to navigate and engage folks more. For example, the home theater section hasn't has a post since December. Do we really need 4 different DirecTV forums?

It should be know that the only moderators who should have power to moderate there are myself and KE4EST. (Unless I set a setting wrong somewhere which is possible.) :)
A bit of a surprise. Ronnie has always been the guide to good behavior in the Pitt's many incarnations. I always thought he was the prime moderator.
IMO, the pit needs gentle, but constant attention, and frankly you two have other pressing issues.
