D* Killing E* now in HD

My dad was all excited about maybe switching to D* over the new HD channels until I told him no free HD DVR and they would have to have 2 dishes.

Speed HD has the potential to be awesome.

I agree about they need to offer a free hd-dvr, maybe even a monthly lease fee of $10 instead of the $5 mirror fee to make up for it. And why would he need 2 dish's ???

Considering that it hasn't really even been a month yet since D* started adding all the new HD, I'm willing to give E* some time. Since I have already purchased NHL CI and it is not transferable, I will certainly be staying through April.

I am in the same situation that you are with NHL CI......I will wait it out until April with E* and see what the situation is then.

I expect all the excuse makers to once again talk about how great VOOM is and how great E has been in the past. But D launched the followign today:

FOX Business HD
Cartoon Network HD
FX HD
Fuel HD
Speed HD

All 5 of these are not on E... Stretchovision this stretchovsion that.. whatever it is, it is a LOT better than what were getting right now thru standard SD. I am beginning to wish I had gone with D and been patient a few months ago when I signed a contract.

Killing? Not hardly. other than Speed HD, the rest are fluff and JAMMED full of commercials. No thanks.

You should bail on your contract and pay the early term fee. Tell D* what you are doing and maybe they will even pay you to terminate and come on over. I have a feeling you'd feel so much better.

 ;)

I have never watched any of those channels before, except for FX. I won't watch FX now either because I can't stand all the interruptions from pop ups, bugs, snipes, banners and audio graphics during programs. I agree with you 8bit, I can wait because I'm not missing a thing.

Well, I would rather have SD than stretched out but I know that is a personal opinion.

I don't watch any of today's adds except for the Cartoon Network but I do wish we had a couple of those D* channels - Starz, Smithsonian, and MGM-HD. I am not too worried though, it's almost getting to HD saturation for me anyway with almost all of my major sports in HD.

I've got both E* and D* for the moment (just added D* a couple of weeks ago) and have the largest package with each service. The dozen or so HD Premium movie channels I get in MPEG-4 are stunning and blow away the premium channels on E*, especially Starz; the two older MPEG-2 movie channels are essentially the same as E*. The upconverted SD material on the other channels are mostly sharp but it really depends on the source (if it's coming from old tape, dv cams, etc).

Any one else who has seen both care to comment?

To me the whole ball of wax is essential the PQ and movie channels. If D* has significantly better HD PQ and is offering more premium HD movie channels to boot, then that is an extremely attractive package.

I've been with E* for 10.5 years and am reluctant to change - I know the gear so well and have installed & upgraded everything myself, starting with a self-install package with a 4000 receiver & D300 dish back in 1997. Went through numerous upgrades (4900 to 7100 to 510 to 811 to 942) until last August when I put in my 622 with all new DP LNBs & dual dish setup.

I guess I need to head over to the D* forums to start learning about their receivers. Don't know anything about them, except that one is named the HR20.

AND THIS MIGHT GET PEOPLE GOING TO D* AS WELL :
News Briefs: Charlie Backs Hillary
MISCELLANY -- EchoStar CEO Charlie Ergen, along with company co-founders Candy Ergen and Jim DeFranco said they are supporting Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) in her campaign for the presidency in 2008. The company is encouraging its retailers to support the senator's run as well, urging them to donate $2,300 to Clinton's campaign. If dealers comply, they'll get an invitation to a fund-raising event Oct. 23 at Ergen's home. What a deal.

same boat as you..until april maybe

I am in the same boat as you Jay, however, when I received my CI renewal later, it did state I had until november 9th. to cancel the CI package if I choose to do so.

Yep.. charlie has dropped the ball. I dont know how long I wanna wait it out either.. I just want my HD, if charlie cant provide it to me, and his competitor can, well I will revoke my fanboy status! ;0

Now that's scary but if memory serves me right. both D and E play both sides and donate to each party.

I wouldn't count Dish out of the picture just yet. How many years did Dish have more HD than Directv and we really didn't hear much of anything from the people with Directv.

This is only the 3rd and 4th week, I think dish will respond to all of this very soon!
