This bird was launched last week so I was wondering how long will it be until this bird is operational at 74W (temporarily replacing SBS 6) before moving to its ultimate destination at 91W (replacing G11)?

Panamsat's request to the FCC asked for authorization to operate at 74 degrees West for 180 days beginning on June 28, 2007. In orbit testing is supposed to occur at 75.5 degrees West. Galaxy 17 looks to be currently at 87 degrees West and moving East 1.3 degrees per day. It should be ready for in orbit testing in about nine days.

...and talking about 74 W, is it just me that can't get a decent signal. ONN it so unstable. I get any where from 26 to 66 signal strength on any given day. Picture quality is around 40 on a good day. I for one can't wait for SBS 6 to say Adios!!!!

SBS6 has been okay for me here on the West Coast. I've had the most trouble with Galaxy 11.

After in-orbit testing at 81 degrees West, Galaxy 17 is moving further East. It's currently at 79 degrees West and moving at 1.1 degrees per day. It should be at 74 degrees West in about 5 days.

LyngSat's showing it at 75.5 degrees West. How long will it be in testing there and when can we expect to "see it" at 74 degrees West?

The FCC filing in message 2 requests authorization beginning June 28, 2007 to operate Galaxy 17 at 74 Degrees West.

Is it still going to be KU only or will it now be C/Ku?

Galaxy 17 is both C and Ku. I've seen some saturation testing on Cband. Horizons 2 which will be the long term replacement for SBS 6 will be ku only.

You are correct. Once Horizons 2 is launched later this year to 74 degrees West, Galaxy 17 will move to 91 degrees West and replace Galaxy 11.

So tomorrow's the day that Galaxy 17 is supposed to be operational in its temporary location at 74W. Should we expect to see an immediate improvement in signal quality with this new bird? And what happens to SBS 6?

Also they have requested permission to relocate Galaxy 9 which is currently colocated with SBS 6 at 74.15 degrees West to 81 degrees West.

So it appears that the ku portion of Galaxy 17 may be used as backup and SBS 6 will still be in operation until Horizons 2 is launched. Since Galaxy 9 is moving, they may use the Cband portion of Galaxy 17 at 74 degrees. However, Galaxy 9 was rarely used when it was there.

The V TPs on SBS6 do really suck.

to conduct space station Telemetry, Tracking, Control, and Monitoring operations while at the 75.5° W.L. orbital location and to operate the
Galaxy 17 in the 5925-6425 MHz (Earth-to-space) and 3700-4200 MHz (space-to-Earth) conventional C-band frequencies, and in the 14.0-14.5
GHz (Earth-to-space) and 11.7-12.2 GHz (space-to-Earth) conventional Ku-band frequencies, at the 75.5° W.L. orbital location for the purposes
of conducting in-orbit testing in accordance with the terms, conditions, and technical specifications set forth in its application, the attachment to
grant and the Commission's rules.
