MLB 2008 Season

Gee, it sounds like what Dombrowski should be looking for as well, this should be interesting.

The Tigers can't possibly want to spend MORE money can they? How does this team turn a profit?

I always wondered how a mid-market team such as the Tigers spend as much as the big boys? Going into 2008, the Tigers had the second highest payroll at $138,685,197!

Do they have a billionaire owner by any chance?!

Mr. Mike Illich.

Thye have NOT spent like they did this year in previous years (actually since when Pudge got here they started spending finally, but prior to then, they did not spend that much in comparison.

As for spending more money, look at who is gone and or leaving over the off season.
Pudge is already gone, Sheffield will more than likely be gone, Kenny Rogers will probably be gone, Todd Jones will be gone, probably Rentaria and maybe Thames will be gone, although, I not real sure what the plans are for Thames. Personally I hope they keep him.

I remember the first time Ilitch spent some money on the payroll,(around the time Cecil Fielder was still here, a couple of years before Comerica opened). They had a bad season, and Ilitch purged the payroll, and that payroll was about 40% of what it is now. Once bitten, twice shy, but he went for it anyhow. I waiting to see if there will be another purge, he has to be on a thin line now profitwise, so I really can't see him expanding the payroll. Given that just about every game has been sold out this year, there aren't many ways to expand revenue, other than increasing prices. Seat prices are reasonable by MLB standards, but the concession stand prices are too high by mine. I think Jimbo is correct about Sheffield, Rogers, Jones, and most certainly, Renteria. (Bet Dombrowski would like a do-over on that trade!) Losing those numbers might enable them to go after C.C., but free agent pitching is often as not, a losing proposition in my book.

He does own "Little Caesar's" pizza chain, and his wife is the majority owner of Motor City casino in Detroit. Not to mention substantial real estate holdings in downtown Detroit, and the Red Wings. No, he's not hurting for money.

It's nice to have an owner that has money and will spend it when it will improve the team .... :D

Unlike the Fords......
Maybe the Ford's are the reason I have never owned a Ford , at least since I've been buying my own cars. :eureka

Any interesting developments from tonight's games?

One thing to note: the Nationals REALLY stink. Too bad they have a minor-league team in their major-league stadium.

They definitely should have held on to Alfonso Soriano.

As the Angels juggernaut rolls on to a team record 13 game lead in the Al West, the Yankees' Xavier Nady quietly hit a HR against them in the 6th inning to continue his hitting streak to 9 consecutive games. I think the Yankees are happy with him.

The White Sox lost starter Jose Contreras for the year earlier tonight. Contreras ruptured his achilles tendon covering first base vs. the Red Sox.

I posed this question on the "Tigers" thread, but I need a wider response, so I'm posting it here.

When did "pitch counts" become the defacto way to running your pitching staff? When I was a kid in the 60's it wasn't unusual for teams to have 4 man rotations. 300 innings was not rare, and complete games have become almost extinct. So what has changed? These kids are bigger, faster, stronger, etc... they benefit from year round strength training, better diets, etc... and yet they can't throw over 100 pitches every 5th day? Somebody explain to me why these kids can't do what pitchers in the sixties and previous were able to do?

You're preaching to the choir. I think there are more arm injuries than there ever has been ,and the only thing I can point to is the friggin' pitch counts.

This subject used to drive the late Dick Radatz absolutely crazy. He claimed they were ruining these pitchers by treating them with kid gloves. I believe the evidence is pointing to him being correct.

Rays phenom David Price got promoted to AAA today. Price, the lefty starter and #1 overall 2007 draft choice out of Vanderbilt, is 11-0 with 92 K's and 1.86 ERA in 95 innings pitched between A and AA. The Rays are hinting that Price could be a September callup, and could be used in a setup role, ala Joba Chamberlain last season. Things are certainly looking up for the Rays. You know what........good for them! :)

You still rooting for the Rays?

I know you were doing so before Boston got rid of their clubhouse cancer, but now that the Red Sox are back in your good graces, are you still going to root for the Rays?

No, I'm rooting for the Red Sox. It's just nice to see a team like Tampa do so well.

A couple of MLB notes:

* Injured Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain will begin a throwing program Wednesday as part of his rehab.

* The Blue Jays have released veteran outfielder Shannon Stewart.

OUCH!!! First Carl Crawford and now Evan Longoria! The Rays put All-Star rookie 3B, Evan Longoria on the 15 day DL, retro to Friday. Longoria had his right wrist fractured when he was hit by a J.J. Putz pitch on Thursday. The Rays will now have to navigate through- at least- the next two weeks without their two best players.
