MLB 2008 Season

So the worst team in baseball just threw a monkey wrench into the A.L. East race...

This reminds me of the Red Sox best hitter missing the entire 1975 postseason. Jim Rice had his wrist broken when he was hit by Vern Ruhle of the Tigers in late September.

I just looked it up................57-102.................last place in the AL East......37.5 games behind the Red Sox.

Ouch.

How many games are the Angels ahead of the Mariners- 40?

BTW, what's the record for largest differential between a first-place team and a last-place team in baseball?

I remember both the Angels and Rangers finished 40+ games behind the record-breaking Mariners of 2001. I'm sure there were others similar to that.

Astros' Lee undergoes surgery on broken left fingerAug. 11, 2008

HOUSTON -- Astros outfielder Carlos Lee had surgery to repair his broken left little finger on Monday, the team announced.
Lee suffered multiple fractures in the finger when he was hit by a pitch Saturday at Cincinnati. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Tom Mehlhoff at The Methodist Hospital in Houston. Lee had pins inserted in his finger.
Lee was hitting .314 with 28 home runs and led the NL with 100 RBI through 115 games.
Ty Wigginton, the Astros' regular third baseman, was starting in left field as Houston opened a four-game series against San Francisco on Monday.

The Red Sox are replacing one knuckleballer for another, when Charlie Zink makes his ML debut vs. the Rangers tomorrow night replacing the injured Tim Wakefield.

OUCH!!! First Carl Crawford and now Evan Longoria! The Rays put All-Star rookie 3B, Evan Longoria on the 15 day DL, retro to Friday. Longoria had his right wrist fractured when he was hit by a J.J. Putz pitch on Thursday. The Rays will now have to navigate through- at least- the next two weeks without their two best players.

Not a good situation for the Rays at all. You hate to see an underdog team such as the Rays fall short of their accomplishments because of injuries. With that said, I just don't see how the Rays can weather the storm without 2 key offensive contributors in Longoria and Crawford.

This is why no one should ever dance and sing until their team has actually won something substantial (division, league championship, etc.). Even with their commanding 14 game lead in the AL West, with one unlucky break the Angels could watch their season dwindle right away from them.

I am sorry for the Rays and their fans. My only wish for them is that John Madden with his adopted "Scioscia Way of Baseball" can keep everyone calm and playing one game at a time and keep the ship righted.

Another note about that Tiger season (I actually remember this)....

They finished the season in an 11-47 stretch that began with an 18 game losing streak. They only won 6 of their last 32.

Uh oh..... I smell an excuse coming...... go ahead, SAY IT!

Nope. You guys won that series fair and square. It's not like the Red Sox didn't have viable options for Rice either. They already had Yaz to play leftfield (he was MUCH better than Rice defensively) when he wasn't playing first base. They had Juan Benequiz/Bernie Carbo to play left or Cecil Cooper to play first, depending if Yaz started in left or at first.

No. The Reds were the better team (still the best team in my baseball lifetime) with players like Rose, Bench. Morgan, Perez, Griffey, and Foster. However, your starting pitching didn't blow me away. Gullett, Billingham, Norman, and Nolan were definitely a good rotation, but I always got the feeling they could be had. I do think the Reds bullpen was underrated. Rollie Eastwick, Will McEnaney, Pedro Borbon, and Clay Caroll were the 70's version of the Nasty Boys. What an unbelievable roster those 75-76 Big Red Machine teams had. The only thing I thought that team lacked was a decent bench (not that you needed it with the starting eight that you fielded nightly). The only reserves that I remember form those teams are Ed Armbrister and Plummer (backup catcher??).

According to MLB Trade Rumors, Paul Byrd cleared waivers and the Red Sox are considering picking up his remaining $7.5 million contract. More to follow as news/talks progress.

Bill, are you hearing anything along these lines in Boston?

No, I haven't, but I would certainly welcome it! I've always like Byrd, he's a very serviceable 3/4 type starter.

Red Sox are beating the Rangers, 10-0 after the first inning!!! Big Papi has 2 three-run homers in the inning!!!
