Subscribe from Dish Online or from Reseller?

When I search for a local retailer on the Dish site for my zip code Cellular Connection pops up. Is this where I check first? Do you know anything about this retailer? It appears to offer service in several major markets.

They are not really a 'retailer'. They are a chain of cell phone stores who can write up an order but that's about all. A real retailer does their own installations, has parts in stock and knows what they're talking about. :)

I have till first week in August to make up my mind, so I shopped on line and also called a local dealer that was listed on Dish's website. The on line CSR gave me all sorts of freebies as a new customer whereas the local never mentioned the freebies. Locally I will pay sales tax of roughly 10%. Do on line orders pay sales tax?

Local retailers have the same deals as Dish. New customers who qualify get the 3 months of free movie channels and BB@Home, 4 months protection plan, etc., etc. Local retailers usually don't charge 'processing fees' or shipping charges, most online retailers do. Watch out for the small print when buying online.

Sales tax on what? The equipment and install are free if you qualify.

The one thing that you don't see online and the Dish CSRs don't tell you are all the small print details. The discounts they advertise are misleading because you do not automatically get the credits. I make sure I let my customers know how they receive them.

Dish can not offer you any more than what a retailer can if you are a new customer. Dish just may make it sound better if you go with them though.

I have to weigh in here. I'm an RSP tech for the ia/ne/ks area. I know the independant retailers in my area do done of the worst work I've ever seen. it seems like 90% of the time when I pull up to an appt installed by one, I have to completely reinstall the customers whole system. Not grounded properly, RG59 wire, barrels/splicing right at the dish, crap mounting, the list goes on. I generally tell my customers to only use a retailer if it's something they want/need "right now" & dont want to wait for an appt from dish or for shipping (ie, replacement remote).
As for supporting local business, why should I be punished for having my main office out of town? Is it not enough that I work/live locally? Do I some how not deserve to earn money to take care of my family? I never liked that argument. Ok, rant over.
Ok, the main thing I'd say is just ask your neighbors who they went threw & what they thought.

Obviously not every retailer is going to be great, that's any business. I also understand that you need to have work too but just because a customer calls your office does it mean that you'll be the one that gets sent out. Customers like to know who they're dealing with.

As for your comment about retailers doing crappy work, I'll bet you can ask any retailer and they'll rattle off numerous occasions where a DNS tech messed up a job that they originally installed. It goes both ways.

If you want more personalized support then go to a reputable retailer. The deals should be the same regardless of where you go.

And the same can be said of the RSP around here. They recruit from the street and for the six or so months the poor slobs work for them before they quit or get fired they do some of the crappiest work imaginable. Dishes pointed at trees, attached to the middle of a roof with pitch patch because they missed the stud, etc., etc. You are probably an exception, but there's a reason they're called 'Dish Monkeys'. :)
