No, the user base is the issue. Remember the 50x series use the same code, and there are far more of them in the field than the x21 series.

There are enough of the 50x receivers still in use to justify maintaining the code.
Hell they even added name based recording to that code fairly recently. They would not have expended the resources if the user base was as small as you think.

I just wish dish came up with better plan for customers owning these receivers instead of basically screwing them formally. I got lucky and got 3 out of my 5 replaced with out leasing from them at almost no cost. I still stuck with 2

Ignore Microsoft and any FUD that they might spread about not having their "support".

I did a fresh install of Win98SE last week along with all of the available patches. The secret is getting IE 5.5 or IE6 installed from a file so you can download the updates.

The 50x and 721/921 code are NOT the same code... similar yes. They are even stored in different repositories.

I just wanted to update the post with how things turned out for me. It turns out that waiting wasn't a bad strategy. The CEO group treated me very well, and I'm a very happy Dish customer again.

After the new hardware install, the tech took my 721 with him. I had just enough time to transfer the things I wanted to keep to DVD.

No hard feelings after losing the 721.

I don't think so. I think the new encryption would have done it even without the TiVo suit. Maybe sooner, as Dish would have spent resources on the new encryption sooner, instead of on the TiVo suit.

Isn't 7x00 is the Microsoft (DishPlayer) mess? I believe Dish shut them down before losing the TiVo case. That had no control over that code and wanted rid of the hassles it imposed.

The 721 never had many users and even fewer when they decided to shut it down.

Look at the number of excluded units from the TiVo case, less than 200,000 and that's several different sets of code. They are not going to maintain the code for less than 100k users.

I'll wager there are 4x the number of 50x users currently than the 721 and 921 (combined) ever had. The unit was just too expensive for most, and we all know Dish had a crap policy about existing customers looking to buy a new receiver (I paid $400 for my 4700 when it was a new model, and one of the few with Dolby Digital output). The 721 at least had limited availability for a long time too.

What I said was that without the suit Dish would have shut down the 721 anyway, because of the limited number in the field not justifying the high support costs.

I also posited (look that one up if you need to) that in the absence of the TiVo suit, Dish would have moved to the new encryption sooner and thus shut down the 721 sooner.

right so now u agree for what i been saying all along , it started cause of tivo, so bottom line is if was not for tv theyed be up and usable. they could of use them for mpeg3 if they wanted too
